Marc Emery's extradition proceedings postponed

VANCOUVER - Extradition proceedings against Marc Emery, Vancouver's self-styled Prince of Pot, set for Monday were postponed.

The B.C. Supreme Court put over until tomorrow the hearing at which time the proceedings are expected to be adjourned until Feb. 6 while negotiations and details of a plea bargain are worked out.

US federal prosecutors have charged Emery and two associates - Michelle Rainey and Greg Williams - with drug offences and money laundering for operating a global marijuana seed business.

All face a minimum 10-year sentence and the possibility of life if convicted in the U.S.

But under the proposed deal, Emery would plead guilty and apparently serve a minimum of five years behind bars, mostly in Canada.

In return, he is demanding the charges against his friends be dropped.

Assistant US Attorney Todd Greenberg in Seattle, where Emery was indicted in 2005, has so far declined to comment.

He was unavailable Monday because of the public holiday in the U.S.

HAMBURG - The active ingredient in marijuana may suppress tumour invasion in highly invasive cancers, according to new research in Germany.

Cannabinoids, the active components in marijuana, are already used medically to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment, such as pain, weight loss and vomiting.

But the new study, published in the latest issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, finds that the compounds may also have an anti-cancer effect.

Last night RP’s grandson (I didn’t catch his name) interviewed Jessie Benton, RP campaign spokesman, on RP Revolution radio. Jessie said that at the end of the 4th quarter RP had 8 million in the bank. The report has not been posted at www.fec.gov yet. RP’s grandson did refer to RP getting support from a billionaire, but that’s all that was said. If the rumors are correct, this billionaire is going to air 3 - 1 hour infomercial type ads. I think 1000 – 60 second ads would be much more effective, but they didn’t ask me. The link to the interview is here.

Kroger Co., the largest U.S. grocery chain, is recalling a bean salad sold at its deli counters in 14 states because of potential contamination that might cause botulism in consumers.

The tri-bean salad was sold in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming, Kroger said in a statement.

The beans were sold to Kroger by New Era Canning Co., which issued an earlier voluntary recall of all canned green beans and garbanzo beans produced in the last five years, because they might be contaminated with germs that cause botulism, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its Web site.

Kroger, based in Cincinnati, said no illnesses have been reported, and other salad products weren’t affected by the recall, according to the statement.

Spokeswoman Meghan Glynn didn’t immediately return a voicemail message seeking comment.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Hoping to prevent a market meltdown and recession, the Federal Reserve lowered its overnight lending rate by 75 basis points to 3.50% on Tuesday in a rare move between formal meetings.

The cut came after global financial markets sold off in dramatic fashion on fears that bad bets in credit markets could spread further and drive the U.S. economy into recession. See full story on London markets.

It was the largest rate cut by the Fed since the early 1980s.

The Fed also lowered its discount rate by 75 basis points to 4%
